When the owners of this original period home in Armadale sought to expand, they faced a clear constraint: limited rear space, an angled side boundary and strict planning requirements that demanded a thoughtful, responsive design. Ten years previously we completed a bathroom extension on the opposite side so returning back to us for this project was very meaningful to our entire team.
Largely contained beneath the existing roofline, the new kitchen and dining area extend outward following the obtuse boundary. Expansive glazing and skylights flood the space with natural light, creating a striking contrast to the home’s more traditional interiors. A sculptural triangular marble island, softened by rounded column ends, anchors the kitchen and forms a refined focal point alongside timber veneer joinery and a window splashback that draws the garden inward.
A sunken garage, carefully designed to meet strict height limits, presented a significant challenge. Concealed beneath a green roof, it reads as an extension of the landscape rather than a built form.
